Midlothian Family Dentistry for Periodontics (Gum Disease Treatment)

Periodontal disease (gum disease) is a common oral health problem that is often known as the “silent disease”. The disease begins its attack on the gums and will work its way down into the bone if left untreated. Many signs and symptoms of gum disease go unnoticed until it reaches the more advanced stages of periodontitis. As a leading cause of tooth loss, gum disease may also be associated with chronic diseases including diabetes and heart disease. Dr. Monecell, Dr. Sorenson and staff work together through prevention, early detection and gum disease therapy to improve patients’ oral health. Midlothian Family Dentistry offers its periodontal treatments for patients from Midlothian, Richmond, and surrounding communities.

What is Gum Disease?

Our mouths are full of bacteria, which we usually remove by cleaning, brushing and flossing our teeth regularly. When that bacteria is left uninterrupted, it forms a sticky, invisible film on teeth, known as plaque. Plaque that has accumulated and hardened is known as tartar. The plaque and tartar attack the mouth structure, causing inflammation in the gums, and decay in the gums and bone. This can cause soreness, swelling, and even bleeding. This stage of gum disease is called gingivitis, and is reversible through treatment.

If gum disease is allowed to advance, the damage to the gums and bone can only be treated to renew oral health and eradicate the infection. Patients with advanced periodontal disease often experience other symptoms to include tooth, gum and jaw pain, loose teeth, or even tooth loss.

Gum Disease Treatment at Midlothian Family Dentistry

Prevention and early detection are our primary defenses in the fight against gum disease. This includes regular checkups at the dentist for early detection. In addition to professional cleanings, patients need a daily brushing and flossing routine to help minimize plaque and tartar build-up.

Laser-Assisted periodontal therapy is performed at Midlothian Family Dentistry. Patients suffering from periodontitis and advanced periodontitis have non-surgical options with Dr. Mondavi and Dr. Sorenson. Laser-assisted treatments are designed to minimize patient discomfort, quicken healing times, eradicate bacteria, and promote the regeneration of soft tissue to improve oral health.

Patients are seen by one of six dental hygienists at our Richmond facility. They provide guidance, preventative care and preliminary cleaning therapies. At Midlothian Family Dentistry, we are focused on the patient experience, and always strive to deliver effective, compassionate care.

If you feel you may benefit from our periodontal treatments, please contact us to schedule an appointment. Midlothian Family Dentistry welcomes patients from Midlothian, Richmond, and the surrounding communities.
