Read Full ArticleMidlothian Family Dentistry has always been at the forefront of adopting new technologies, leading the way in 2008 as an early adopter of 3-D Cone Beam Computer Topography (CBCT) scanning. Unlike conventional digital 2-D radiographs, CBCT-generated images provide a ‘virtual reality’ of dental anatomy and conditions, allowing better visualization and diagnoses, which in turn creates more treatment choices and puts you in control of your treatment options. In 2016, we replaced our original CBCT with a high-resolution / low-dose radiation CBCT scanner for even greater capability.
And we didn’t stop there! We have continued to adopt the latest technologies in all areas of the practice including: a multiple wavelength scanner for detecting oral cancer; LASER technology to visualize undetectable caries; hard and soft tissue lasers for more comfortable procedures and quicker healing; CBCT volumetric rendering of airway constrictions to manage obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and even less invasive computer-guided implant surgery. When you choose us to provide your treatment, you’re assured that our continued training on the use of these advanced devices allows our doctors to conduct procedures designed to help reduce pain, increase healing performance, and provide more predictable and successful treatment outcomes.
All water is run through a bank of submicron purification filters with backflow prevention, exceeding allowable municipal standards for reducing waterborne pathogens and minerals.
We begin and end each appointment by thoroughly cleaning, disinfecting and protecting each operatory and its fixtures with anti-microbial treatment and protective coverings. Each instrument we use undergoes a vigorous multi-stage ultrasonic cleaning / debridement process and is wrapped, sealed and sterilized, only to be opened during your procedure. Autoclaves are spore tested and monitored on a regular basis to ensure they meet OSHA standards for sterility certification.
Our staff is continually trained and tested on the latest OSHA / HIPAA regulations and best practices, including the proper use of protective clothing and gear.

Biolase® EpicX is a small low-level energy laser that is perfect for a wide variety of treatment options. Hygienists love it, for LBR (laser bacteria removal), where it’s up to 99.9% effective in killing bacteria in the gingival sulcus (commonly referred to as pockets) around your teeth. DIAGNOdent® uses fluorescence laser technology to safely detect hidden sub-surface caries. By combining the readings from the DIAGNOdent pen with digital radiology and clinical examination, hidden decay can be found and treated before it has a chance to do further damage to the pulp or enamel of teeth. It’s a quick, painless and reliable way to find tooth decay missed by more conventional methods. If detected early, caries is oftentimes treatable without drills and anesthetics!
