Sedation Dentistry

Relieving anxiety & providing care through sedation dentistry

Midlothian Family Dentistry understands that for some of our patients the idea of any dental procedure, large or small, can come with an overwhelming feeling of fear and anxiety. Sedation dentistry can help alleviate those concerns and allow you to receive the dental care that you need in a relaxing, stress-free state. We offer customizable sedation plans, so you get to choose the level of sedation that you are comfortable with. We are also happy to provide Swedish foam pillows, soft cozy blankets, Pandora radio for your choice of music, and low-level lighting so you can relax and feel at ease during your visit. Our comprehensive approach can help even the most anxious patients get the dental care that they need.

We take pride in being recognized as one of the area’s leading Sedation Dentistry practices and have built our reputation through quality, empathetic care. Our doctors and staff are here to provide you with answers to your questions and walk you through every step of the process.

Choosing the right sedation method to meet your needs

There are many factors to consider when choosing the correct sedation technique for you. The type of procedure, the time it takes to complete, and your personal preferences will influence your specific treatment plan. For some patients, a light sedation that slightly eases their stress just enough without preventing them from being able to communicate with their doctor is preferred. For others, they want to be completely “out” while receiving their care. There is no right or wrong way, it only matters what is best for you. Therefore, we are happy to offer a variety of safe sedation options to our patients allowing them to comfortably receive the care they require. Our staff will help you determine which of the methods are best for you.

The sedation methods that we offer

Nitrous Oxide

Commonly referred to as "laughing gas," this is the lightest form of sedation used and a safe and effective way to manage anxiety during a procedure. Additionally, its effects diminish quickly, which means there are no long-lasting side effects, and you can even drive yourself to and from your appointment. Administered via a small nose hood, nitrous oxide is the easiest way for patients to relax during treatment and then go about their normal day afterward.

Oral Moderate Sedation (OMS)

If you prefer a higher level of sedation, consider Oral Moderate Sedation (OMS) which involves taking a small dosage of medication just prior to your appointment that is then augmented during your procedure with additional sedatives. OMS is for the patient who wants to have very little to no awareness of the dentistry and does not mind having the whole day off. A companion is required for transport and to be with you after the procedure at home. The level of sedation can be customized based on your expectations and level of anxiety. OMS is the most popular form of sedation we perform as it bests meets the needs of our patients.

General/IV Sedation

For patients who wish to be completely under for their procedure, we offer General Intravenous Sedation services. This sedation technique is administered by a medical anesthesiologist from Anesthesia Connections, a local anesthesiology practice that delivers non-hospital-based anesthesia across Virginia. In addition to being certified, both Dr. Sorenson and Dr. Monacell work in tandem with Anesthesia Connections’ anesthesiologists to ensure every aspect of your appointment is managed to our exacting standard of care for maximum safety, efficacy, and efficiency.

Sedation FAQs

How safe is sedation?

Sedation dentistry is a safe and routine part of modern dentistry, especially when administered by the experienced team at Midlothian Family Dentistry. Each staff member, whether in clinical or administrative roles, is required to undergo training and certification. We build redundancy in our staffing, with both Dr. Sorenson and Dr. Monacell being certified in Sedation techniques, while using a team of qualified medical anesthesiologists who deliver anesthesia during IV sedation procedures. No patient is ever left unattended at any time no matter how light or ‘routine’ the procedure. We take the care and safety of our patients very seriously and will review any safety concerns together during your consultation.

Will I be awake during my procedure?

We offer a range of sedation levels and types based on the type of procedure and your preferences. Typically, patients are awake, but in a relaxed and dream-like state that allows them to be able to communicate with the doctor and staff, but unable to feel any pain. IV sedation, however, does allow for you to be in a sleep-like state, completely unaware of the procedure until once the procedure is done and the anesthesia wears off.

Can I drive myself to and from my appointment?

Many patients choose Nitrous Oxide because it allows them to drive to and from the appointment. Generally, you can resume your normal activities relatively quickly after your appointment if you choose this option.

For Oral Moderate and IV sedation, we require that a driver bring you to and from your appointment. When choosing one of these options, you should plan on taking the remainder of the day off before resuming your regular schedule.

Can I eat before my appointment?

We typically recommend that patients receiving general or IV anesthesia avoid eating about six hours prior to their appointment. Some patients report mild nausea after receiving nitrous oxide and we recommend avoiding large meals 2-3 hours before your procedure. Clear liquids are okay to consume during this time.

Our doctors and staff will provide thorough pre-and post-op instructions to help you prepare and recover. If you have any specific dietary restrictions or concerns, please bring them to our attention during your consultation.

How much does sedation dentistry cost and is it covered by my insurance?

Each form of sedation has different costs associated and will be specific to each patient. Your Treatment Coordinator will review your sedation requirements in detail with you ahead of your appointment so you will have a complete explanation of the charges you can expect.

Most dental benefit providers do not provide reimbursement for sedation services; however, your medical insurance provider may cover a portion of your costs. Neither Midlothian Family Dentistry nor Anesthesia Connections can file for your medical insurance provider for you, but we can assist you with getting the proper forms and documentation together to make your filing process as easy as possible. We encourage you to check with your insurance provider directly to understand your coverage.

Finance and supplemental insurance options are available, contact us for further details.
