What To Expect During Your First Visit

While important steps, proper dental care extends beyond regular brushing and flossing. The first step in achieving long-term oral health is performing a comprehensive exam, which includes x-rays, a review of your dental and overall health history, and an evaluation by one of our doctors. We do this for every new patient to develop a deeper understanding of your medical history and to identify any immediate issues that may require treatment. While we understand some patients just want to come in for a cleaning, we are required by law to perform an examination before doing so and believe it is an important step in helping our patients maintain a lifetime of health. Following an evaluation, if no issues are found and time still allows, we often perform a dental cleaning designed to remove any buildup, keeping your teeth and gums healthy. If we are short on time due to initial examinations, we will respectfully ask to set up a follow-up appointment, so that we can provide the amount of attention needed to thoroughly care for your oral health. Should an immediate issue be identified during your evaluation, we will talk through treatment options and find one that best suits your needs.

Regular Dental Cleanings Can Prevent Future Issues

Regular checkups and thorough cleanings are important steps to maintaining your dental hygiene and provide our doctors with an opportunity to identify any potential issues. Identifying a potential issue, such as a cavity, early will help us properly treat it before it worsens or leads to further injury. During a cleaning, one of our Registered Dental Hygienists will thoroughly inspect your teeth and gums before removing any buildup such as plaque, tartar, or debris. As always, our staff will recommend any suggestions for continuing care, including tips for maintaining great oral hygiene between appointments. Additionally, we offer a range of cosmetic dentistry services, including fluoride polishing and whitening. If you are interested in one of Cosmetic Dentistry services, mention it when making your next appointment or during your next visit.

Seeing the Whole Picture With Dental Imaging

Midlothian Family Dentistry has always been at the forefront of adopting new technologies, specifically when it comes to dental imaging. During a routine checkup, we will often take x-rays to monitor your teeth and ensure there are no issues. This routine step provides an extra layer of care by allowing our team to identify issues that may exist under the surface and address anything that may require treatment, such as a cavity, root canal, or impacted wisdom teeth. Should we need a more detailed picture of your teeth and gums, we have a state-of-the-art 3D Cone Beam Computer Topography (CBCT) scanner which produces high-resolution scans of your entire mouth to help with treatment planning and diagnosis.
