What is considered emergency dental care?

Often, if you are experiencing severe oral pain, it is a good indication that you need urgent care but determining if you are experiencing a dental emergency is not always so simple. If you think you or a member of your family requires emergency dental treatment, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Is your pain beyond discomfort and more severe?
  • Are there visible signs of damage such as bleeding or abnormal swelling?
  • Have you lost a permanent tooth or is a tooth loose?

If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, contact our office immediately so a member of our staff can get a better understanding of what may be causing them and schedule an appointment as necessary.

Can you get same-day fillings?

Yes, dental fillings, whether you need to replace a lost filling or a new one, can be completed during one visit to the dentist. Should you require several fillings, we may choose to complete the procedure over multiple visits. During your consultation our team of experienced dentists and staff will work with you to determine the best treatment plan.

Can urgent care treat a dental abscess?

If you or a family member is suffering from an abscessed tooth it is important to seek care right away. An abscessed tooth is an indication of an infection which could be the symptom of a larger problem or lead to a more serious issue, which is why it is important to make an appointment with Midlothian Family Dentistry as soon as possible if you notice any of the following:

  • Difficulty swallowing or breathing
  • Intense toothache
  • Severe pain around your jawbone, ear, or neck area
  • Persistent pain while chewing
  • A discharge in your mouth, often foul smelling or tasting
  • Extreme sensitivity to cold or hot foods
  • Swelling around your jaw, face, or neck

It is always better to be cautious and consult with our doctors than to neglect a potential problem and let it worsen. If you think you may have an abscessed tooth, call our office or an emergency center and seek treatment right away.

What if I need sedation or anesthesia?

If you are experiencing a dental emergency that requires a procedure or surgery, you can rest assured knowing the dentists at Midlothian Family Dentistry are recognized for their sedation dentistry expertise. We understand that a normal visit to the dentist may cause anxiety, and that an urgent appointment may heighten that anxiety. That is why we take extra steps to ensure your comfort throughout your procedure. We also offer Swedish foam pillows, soft cozy blankets, your choice of music, and low-level lighting so you can relax and feel at ease during your visit. Call our office at (804) 897-7900 to learn more about our Sedation Dentistry capabilities.
