Our History

Since 1985, Midlothian Family Dentistry has been dedicated to caring for families across Central Virginia, providing compassionate, trusted, and high-quality dentistry.

What began as a single practice has grown into one of the most innovative and respected dental offices in the Midlothian area.

Founded by Dr. Sorenson, the practice was built on a commitment to patient comfort, advanced treatment, and long-term relationships.

The Vision Behind Our Practice

Coming from a proud military family and a long line of dentists, Dr. Sorenson was deeply influenced by his father’s 43-year career as a U.S. Navy dentist.

With a strong passion for the sciences, Dr. Sorenson chose to study physics during his undergrad. He then continued his education at the VCU School of Dentistry, where he focused on sedation dentistry, dental surgery, and dental implants.

After earning his DDS in 1984, he joined a group practice in Corpus Christi, TX, where he served patients through the American Red Cross at the Naval Health Clinic. While this experience was invaluable, he soon realized he could make an even greater impact by building his own practice.

An innovator and independent thinker at heart, Dr. Sorenson established Midlothian Family Dentistry in 1985. This allowed him to focus on advanced treatments and create a more comfortable, patient-centered experience.

A Practice That Grew with Its Community

As the Midlothian community expanded, so did our practice, growing in location, services, and specialties while maintaining the same commitment to quality patient care.

Growth & Expansion

More than a decade after opening, Dr. Sorenson moved the practice to its current location. In 2008, Midlothian Family Dentistry expanded again, adding more doctors and specialties, including anesthesia under the care of an anesthesiologist.

Expanding Expertise & Leadership

As dental practice evolved, Dr. William Monacell became an integral part of its growth, shaping the level of care and continuity patients experience today. Alongside him, Dr. Richard Byrd joined the practice to provide orthodontics, further expanding comprehensive treatment options.

A Practice Built on Compassion & Expert Care

“The most memorable moments are when I realized I was caring for generations from the same family; watching my patients grow from children to adults who now have children of their own, all continuing their care at our practice.”

— Dr. Sorenson

Dr. Sorenson’s Lasting Legacy

Upon his retirement in 2024, Dr. Sorenson left behind a legacy of compassionate care, clinical excellence, and deep relationships with the families he served. Today, that same commitment continues to guide the experience we provide every patient who walks through our doors.

Midlothian Family Dentistry Community Involvement

Since opening its doors in 1985, Midlothian Family Dentistry has remained deeply committed to serving the community. Throughout his career, Dr. Sorenson regularly volunteered both locally and on overseas missions, providing dental care to those in need.

That commitment continues today, with our team actively participating in community events and supporting a variety of causes. One of our most memorable contributions was raising funds to provide a motorized wheelchair for the Wounded Warrior Project. We have also participated in mission trips, donating dental supplies and services to underserved communities.
